Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, was officially named Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars. After being nominated for 13 awards, it took home the top prize, as well as Actor in a Supporting Role (Sean Penn), Casting, Directing, and Editing.
The action thriller, which opened in theaters on September 26, follows former revolutionary Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his teenage daughter, Willa, played by breakout star Chase Infiniti, as their off-the-grid life unravels when a longtime adversary resurfaces. Though the film is expansive in scale—weaving together espionage, action, and political tension—it’s grounded by the emotional bond between a father and daughter trying to survive the consequences of his past.
The movie was quickly celebrated by critics and audiences following its fall release, thanks in large part to performances by DiCaprio, Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress). The film quickly became a big contender this awards season, taking home the Critics Choice Award for Best Picture and the Golden Globe for Best Picture—Motion Picture or Comedy.
In her recent ELLE Women in Hollywood cover story, Infiniti described the surreal momentum of her sudden rise, saying, “My life is insane. I have to keep pinching myself because I’m like, ‘Is this a dream? Is this fake? Am I in some alternate reality?’ It’s crazy.” Meanwhile, Taylor reflected on the acting challenge she took on with the film: “I’m taking myself out of my comfort zone [to play these] more complex characters,” she told ELLE.
The film’s foundation was a driving reason DiCaprio signed on. In a conversation with Esquire, Anderson reflected on the story’s staying power, saying, “The only thing that matters is the emotional. The emotional comes from the story of a family. It comes from the way we love and hate.”
DiCaprio echoed that sentiment, saying, “It’s about the disconnection between generations. It’s about how this daughter and father relate to one another, and that we are living in a completely different world than the next generation.”
