Another Brazilian film is making waves at the Academy Awards. The Secret Agent, starring Narcos alum Wagner Moura, has earned four nods for this year’s ceremony, including Best Picture and Actor in a Leading Role for Moura. He’ll be competing against Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, and more.
But Moura has been getting praise for the role ever since The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, made its world premiere last May at the Cannes Film Festival, where he earned the Best Actor Award. Filho was also named Best Director.
The praise for Moura is well-deserved. In the political thriller, set in 1977 Brazil amid a military dictatorship, he stars as Marcelo, a researcher on the run and hoping to escape the country with his son. (Without giving too much away, he, like Jordan in Sinners, plays somewhat of a dual role.) Moura made history as the first Brazilian to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama earlier this month. His achievement came a year after Fernanda Torres, star of I’m Still Here, became the first Brazilian woman to win Best Actress.
The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory. And generational trauma,” Moura said while accepting his Golden Globe. “I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too,” he added.
Here’s how to watch his award-worthy performance in the film before the Oscars on March 15.
The film is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+, or rent/purchase on Prime Video.
