The inspection drive was conducted on August 20 with the objective of assessing food quality, hygiene, storage practices, labelling and food handling at hotels, railway pantries and food outlets operating on railway premises. The inspection also covered food served on trains, including Vande Bharat.

Officials noted that these trains were being maintained in a clean and hygienic condition. However, several violations were detected at railway food establishments.

What Happened

Inspectors observed the suspected use of non-permitted food colours, with yellow colouring allegedly used in jalebis and pink colouring found in khoa peda. At a railway station in Haveri district, officials recovered expired Nandini curd and Dodla standardised milk packets.

  • They added that legal proceedings would be initiated against food business operators found violating prescribed food safety norms.
