Hilary Duff’s Explicit ‘Roommates’ Lyrics Are About Far More Than Sex
Hilary Duff goes there in “Roommates,” her second single off her upcoming album luck…or something, singing explicitly about her desire to bring passion back into a long-term relationship—and reignite a thriving sex life.
Duff didn’t let fans speculate too long about the subject of her lyrics. She spelled out the track’s meaning on Instagram, saying the song is an ode to her old life—and the journey of finding yourself again after experiencing major life changes, such as marriage, motherhood, and the general passage of time.
“’Roommates’ is a song about when life is life-ing, babe,” she wrote. “It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time—before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in. It’s the restless hum of wanting to find your way back—to your rhythm, to your person, to yourself.”
Duff touched on this theme during her November interview with Vogue. The outlet asked how motherhood has changed Duff’s perspective on being a pop artist.
“Obviously I’m gonna always put my kids first,” she began. (Duff has four children: 13-year-old son Luca, as well as three daughters she shares with husband Matthew Koma, 7-year-old Banks, 4-year-old Mae, and 1-year-old Townes.) “But over the years, it’s easy for your personal interests to slip lower and lower on a list of priorities until you end up putting yourself last. I’m ready to not do that and just go balls-to-the-wall again.”
She also addressed her upcoming docuseries, which will depict the album’s creation. (Duff has yet to announce an official name or release date for the series.) “I wanted to document what it looks like to try and do this all again with my family,” she said. “When I look at all the big pop stars, not too many of them are also mothers. I chose a different path, so achieving my dreams is going to look a whole lot different now that I have four kids at home. There’s an honesty and an ‘I don’t give a fuck’ mentality that comes with it. I think the docuseries will be fun to watch because the stakes feel higher. You don’t know how this ends for me, but hopefully it ends the way I want it to.”
